Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does AFUE stand for?
A: AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. It is the standard measurement of efficiency for boilers, gas, and oil-fired furnaces. Given in percentages, this number tells you how much fuel the heating plant uses to heat your home, and how much it simply wastes. Higher AFUE percentages will result in greater utility savings.

Q: What does SEER stand for?
A: SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is the way the efficiency of the cooling process for air conditioners and heat pumps are measured and rated. The numerically higher the SEER number, the more efficient the unit will be, resulting in greater utility savings.

Q: Is there a minimum SEER rating?
A: Starting January 23, 2006, the Department of Energy has instituted a SEER Mandate for air conditioning and heat pump manufacturers can produce only components that meet a 13 SEER or higher rating. Older equipment rated less efficient than 13 SEER may continue in use, but it's important to note that the industry will eventually deplete the supply of less efficient equipment (both full units and replacement parts).

Q: How long should my furnace or air conditioner last?
A: Forced air furnaces have a life expectancy of 16-20 years. This time frame is very dependent on a few things, though. Proper sizing, installation, and maintenance are key factors in the longevity of your new equipment. Choose the wrong company to do business with and furnace life can be reduced to as little as 5-8 years!

Q: If I suffer form allergies or asthma, is there a product to help me?
A: YES! Ultra Violet Germicidal lamps kill the harmful bacteria, fungi and molds that can lead to bothersome allergies, illness, and odors. When properly installed near the air conditioning coil, these devices destroy the micro-organisms being disbursed throughout your home, and can improve the efficiency of your cooling unit.

Q: How do I know what size furnace or air conditioner I need?
A: Furnaces and Air Conditioners are not a one-size-fits-all application. During the sales presentation, one of our sales consultants will perform a load calculation on your home. We measure things like total square footage, window and wall area, and insulation R-values. Using this method ensures White Bear Mechanical has exactly calculated the size of your new heating and cooling equipment.

Q: My house gets very dry in the winter. What can I do?
A: During the heating season, the indoor humidity level should hover around 30 to 40 percent. In our cold winter climate, many homes fall well below 30 percent. You can eliminate static shocks, "cotton-mouth" as well as protect wood floors and furniture by installing an Aprilaire humidifier with automatic control in your home.

Q: How often should I change the air filter in my furnace?
A: This question can be tough to answer. The general rule of thumb is to check it monthly, but it really depends on the type of filter you have and the activity level in your home. Aprilaire type media filters are designed for yearly replacement, while standard pleated paper filters should be replaced every 30 to 60 days.
